Nyquist, Exaggerator, and Gun Runner may have been the top three in the Derby, but MASS had its own contest of “Ladies in Hats” with top winners Diana Ervin, Connie Warren and Judy Wood. There were 92 in attendance comprised of 60 Full Members, 22 Associate Members, and 10 new Associate Members. We welcome these new members to MASS!!! The club now has 138 Full Members and 122 Associate Members on record for 2016.

The Host Team included Mic MacCoy, Carole Wunderlin, Rick and Judy Joy, Gerry Chupik, Nanci Donald, and Bud Hunter. Colorful flags, jockey’s hats, and horses reflected the “Kentucky Derby” theme. Thanks to everyone for bringing food and friends, and for helping with clean up by clearing your tables before leaving! DJ Dennis Brumble played a variety of tunes including some blues songs and line dances that kept the dance floor full. Laura Stutts and Ann Herndon purchased tickets jointly and won the 50/50 drawing.

A few members had to withdraw from the Fundraiser Team, so we could use some extra help. Give me a call if you are willing to help out.

SOS Cards are still available for $30 from Yvonne Jordan or Mike Sigler.

Our June 4th Social will be a Beach theme, so get out those brightly colored summer outfits! At the May 10th Board Meeting, modifications were made concerning Associate Members entry fees (see email on “Modification of Changes to Entry Fees”). As a result for the June Social, Full Members will pay $5 and Associate Members will pay $7.

Until then Keep Shagging!!!

The Final Four of March Madness did not keep 94 of us from enjoying a night of dancing and socializing. Even though some folks brought their tablets, the password that was given to us would not work. Of the 94 in attendance, there were 58 Full Members, 18 Associate Members, 1 new Full Member, and 17 new Associate Members. We welcome our new members to MASS!!! The club now has 137 Full Members and 111 Associate Members on record for 2016.

The Host Team included Brenda & Lew Sorrese, Rose Sorrese, Marie Burt, Sandra Blake, and Charlie Lafferty. The colorful floral decorations suited the “Spring Fling” theme. Thanks to everyone for bringing food and friends, and for helping with clean up by clearing your tables before leaving! DJ David Sessoms played a variety of tunes including some older blues songs that kept the dance floor full. Cile Sills won the 50/50 drawing and donated it back to the club for our Fundraiser in August.

MASS Fundraiser Kick Off Meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday, April 12 at 4pm at the Elks Lodge downstairs conference room. If you wish to join the Fundraiser Team, please attend this meeting. Also, please enter and exit through the downstairs bar entrance as the alarm will be on upstairs.

SOS Cards are still available for $30 from Yvonne Jordan or Mike Sigler.

Attached is a Flyer announcing the “Kentucky Derby” theme for our May 7 Social.

Until then Keep Shagging!!!

Attendance jumped to 112 for the March 5th Social. That nearly matched last year’s 116 that attended.
Thirty-one of those who enjoyed the evening of dancing, socializing, and snacking were new Associate Members. We welcome them to MASS!!! The club now has 137 Full Members and 95 Associate Members for 2016.

The Host Team included Saundra Lee, Ann Herndon, Laura Stutts, Donna Myrick, Mike Dubbs, and Von Grady. Many of you dressed in green for the St. Patrick’s Day Theme. Thanks to everyone for bringing food and friends, and for helping with clean up by clearing your tables before leaving! DJ Billy Cook played lots of upbeat tunes that kept the dance floor full. I continue to hear positive comments from many members about him being one of our best DJs. Sandra Lee won the 50/50 drawing.

February’s Latest News article mentioned the 600% increase in our expenses for the Socials since 2014, which leaves very little to replenish other expenses of the club. Some members have inquired about other expenses of the club. Among the non-Social related expenses are:

  • Dues to be a member of ACSC (Association of Carolina Shag Clubs)
  • Fees to the National Fastdance Association for protection from copyright infringement
  • Expenses for attendance at required ACSC meetings
  • Liability insurance for the club
  • Supplies for printing sign-in sheets, handouts for Board Meetings, etc.
  • Fees for Call-em-All to send announcements to members
  • Website Expenses

This month’s Board Meeting was held on Tuesday, March 8 and several options were discussed concerning strategies to increase our treasury balance. The Policies and Procedures of MASS specify that there should be a minimum balance of $3000 in the treasury to transition from one year to the next. An email will be sent to all members to list the changes recommended by the Board to handle this situation for this and future years.

SOS Cards are still available for $30 from Yvonne Jordan or Mike Sigler.

See you at the April 2nd Social with “A Spring Fling” theme!

Until then Keep Shagging!!!

Attendance remained at 93 for the February 6 Social. Although that was a good number, last year there were 123 that attended. Thanks for being loyal to your club by showing up! With the addition of new members at this month’s Social, there are now 127 Full Members and 63 Associate Members. Some Full Members from 2015 still have not renewed. Hopefully, they will renew and return by next month’s Social. The MASS email and Call-em-All lists have been edited to reflect the current membership.

The Host Team included Jean & Jim Martin, Venetia Batten, Gene Day, Mike Sigler, and Yvonne Jordan. The decorations reflected the teams of the “2016 Super Bowl – Panthers and Broncos.” (Of course, now we all know, the game did not fare well for our state’s Panthers.) Thanks to everyone for bringing food and friends, and for helping with clean up by clearing your tables before leaving! The DJ Roy Childress played some great tunes, and the bartender Dennis won the 50/50 drawing.

The monthly Board Meeting was held on Tuesday, February 9 and one of the topics discussed was the status of our treasury balance. As many of you know, we moved our Socials from the downstairs Bar Area of the Elks to the Ballroom upstairs at the beginning of 2014. The cost for rental of the space increased from $50 to $350 per month, but the Board did not increase Membership fees nor Entry fees at that time. (I have been told that these fees have not increased in 24 years.) For “most” of the months of 2014 and 2015,we have been fortunate to meet the monthly expense of $550($350 to Elks and $200 to DJ) with the entry fees of each Social based on increased attendance. However, there have been very little fundsto add to the treasury balance. In addition, over the last two years, the club hasincurred additional expenditures including liability Insurance, development of our web site, and annual fees to maintain the web site. We will continue to study this situation and will keep everyone updated about this topic.

We still need additional host team members for July, September, and October. You may sign up on the website, send an email, or contact Connie Warren or Yvonne Jordan.

Remember that SOS Cards are available for $30 from Yvonne Jordan or Mike Sigler.

Note: If anyone brought a dessert to the December Social and is missing a pie server with a green handle, please contact Yvonne Jordan.

See you at the March 5th Social! (I am not sure, but the theme may be St. Patrick’s Day.)

Until then Keep Shagging!!!

Madam President, 2016

MASS had a record breaking turnout for the first 2016 Social with attendance at 93 as compared to 88 in 2015 and 72 in 2014. Thanks for being loyal to your club by showing up! With the addition of 3 new Full Members and 107 Renewed Members, we currently have 110 Full Members. There are 58 Full Members from 2015 who have not renewed. Hopefully, they will renew and return by next month’s Social. From the 2015 roster of Associate Members, 24 returned for the January Social and 14 New Associate Members joined for a total of 38 Associates to start the year. (To remain on the MASS email and Call-em-All list, previous members should rejoin by the February 6 Social.)

Incorporating the theme “Shagging’ in the New Year,” festive table centerpieces were provided by the Host Team: Rebecca Chriscoe, Gaye Saunders, Tommy Thomas, Sandra Blake, and Bill Shockley. Thanks to everyone for bringing food and friends, and for helping with clean up by clearing your tables before leaving! The lively and entertaining DJ Buck Crumpton played some great tunes, and Judi Swann won the 50/50 drawing.

Welcome to returning and new* 2016 Board Members:

President Yvonne Jordan
Vice President Donna Myrick
Secretary Donna Fields*
Treasurer Bert Higgins
Sgt. At Arms Jon Rachels*
Member-at-Large Connie Warren
Member-at-Large Laura Stutts
Past President Mike Sigler

And thanks to Laura Farrell and Fred Smith for their service on the Board in 2015. Board Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month at 4 pm in the Elk’s Club Conference Room downstairs. Members who wish to attend should enter through the downstairs bar as the alarm is active upstairs.

Our web site www.mooreareashagsociety is being updated for 2016. Please check out the site and share your comments. We are in the process of finalizing the Host List for 2016. Currently, we need additional host team members for July, September, and October. You may sign up on the website, send an email, or contact Connie Warren or Yvonne Jordan.

The 2016 SOS Mid-Winter dates are January 15-17, 2016. SOS Cards are available for $30 from Yvonne Jordan or Mike Sigler.

Note: If anyone brought a dessert to the December Social and is missing pie server with a green handle, please contact Yvonne Jordan.

See you at the February 6th Social! (I am not sure, but it may be a Super Bowl theme.)

Until then Keep Shagging!!!

A group of 89 Full Members and 38 Associate Members/Guests attended this annual event beginning with a catered dinner followed by lots of scrumptious desserts supplied by some of our members. The Elks Club entrance, lobby, hearth and bar were exquisitely decorated for the Christmas season by Mary Logan and some of the Elks Club members for an upcoming event scheduled on Sunday. Our table decorations of greenery and candles also reflected the Christmas theme.

The Host Team, led by Bert and Carol Higgins, included Mary Stewart Regensberg, Maria Haight, Mike Sigler, Donna Myrick, Mike Dubbs, and Yvonne Jordan. Music selections were provided by DJ Ron Russ. Mike Sigler won the 50/50 drawing (even though he had trouble finding his ticket); then, he offered to share half of his winnings by having a second drawing which went to Scott Goodfellow.

Currently, only 71 out of 157 Full Members have renewed their membership for 2016. The deadline for renewal is December 31, 2015. If you have not been able to attend the past two socials to renew, then please send your check for $20 (per member) payable to MASS and mail to PO Box 992, Southern Pines, NC 28388.

Associate Members should consider switching to a Full Membership. Basically, the $20 fee is more than recouped through the free dinner and entry fee in December and also the savings of $2 per month on entry fees.

Our January 2nd Social will be here before we know it, and we need additional members for the Host Team. Other months needing Host Team members in 2016 include April, May, July, September, October, and December. If you can assist, please contact a Board Member or send an email to mooreshaggers@gmail.com.

Attached is an article shared by the Association of Carolina Shag Clubs’ Tips and Tidbits Newsletter that was written by Renee Harris Baker from the Lancaster Shag Club. The title is “The Cost of a Shag Club” and it describes what it takes to have a successful shag club. Please read this article to see how every member plays a part in making a club great!!

Thanks for Supporting Your Club and until next time,
Keep Shagging!!!

See You in January!

DJ Gene Sistare’s selection of music kept the dance floor full at Saturday night’s Social. In collaboration with the Host Team, he played Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless The USA” song as veteran members stood in front of the stage while other attendees stood before them to pay tribute for their service. Table decorations of red, white, and blue were displayed by the Host Team members: Gary & Jo Garber, Mike & Donna Thomason, Sandy Forsythe, and Tom Donaghy. DJ Gene Sistare was the 50/50 winner.

There were 88 who attended the Social: 54 Full Members, 21 Associate Members, 5 new Full Members, and 8 new Associate Members. As this was the “Re-Up” Month, 42 full members paid for their renewal and 8 Associates paid to switch to Full Member status in 2016. Any Full Members who wish to renew for 2016 may send a check for $20 payable to MASS at PO Box 992, Southern Pines, NC 28388. Others may download the Full Member application from the website www.mooreareashagsociety.com and send it with payment to the same address.

At the brief Business Meeting, members voted to approve the slate of officers nominated for 2016 as well as the edits to the By-Laws. Also, a survey was distributed to determine if members wanted any changes in the format of the Socials for 2016. Of the 40 forms that were returned, 35 elected to keep the same format. Therefore, we will continue to have Host Teams of 6-8 members who will select a theme, set up tables with simple decorations, work the registration table, handle 50/50 sales, and clean up. Decide which month you would like to host and sign up as soon as possible.

Our December 5th Social is the annual Member Appreciation event, including a catered dinner for all 2015 Full Members at no cost with no entry fee. Associate Members or invited guests may attend at a cost of $15, which must be paid by November 30. Everyone is requested to bring non-perishable foods for donation to the Food Pantry Ministry at West End United Methodist Church.

Last year, there were several “no shows” (mostly by Full Members) which resulted in an unnecessary expense for MASS. Therefore, anyone (Full or Associate or Guest) who makes a reservation and does not cancel by the date listed will be expected to pay the $15 cost to MASS.

You may begin to make your reservations for the December 5th Social now. All reservations must be made by email mooreshaggers@gmail.com, phone 910-585-7292, or mail (MASS, PO Box 992, Southern Pines, NC 28388) and payment of the $15 should be sent to the MASS address. The final deadline for reservations is Monday, November 30.

If circumstances change and you cannot attend, the deadline for cancellations is Wednesday, December 2nd in order to avoid payment.

That’s about all for now. Check the weekly updates and come out to the shag events in the area when possible.

See you at the December Social. Until then,
Keep Shagging!!!

After a rainy week, 85 folks ventured out for a night of fun at our October Social. The group included 47 Full Members, 26 Associate Members, 9 new Associate, and 3 representatives of the charities. The evening began with a Business Meeting to announce a slate of officers for 2016 and proposed changes in the by-laws regarding the incorporation of MASS and the 501 (c) 7 non-profit status of the club. Then checks of $4668.57 were presented to The Interfaith Food Pantry in Aberdeen, represented by Joe DeLuca and the Moore County Special Olympics, represented by Melinda Ransdall. That’s a total of $9337.14 net proceeds raised by MASS at our September Fundraiser!!

Table decorations exemplified the “It’s Fall Ya’ll” theme of our Host Team including: Brenda Phelps, Ron Jones, Pat & Tom Royal, Betty Tarr, Robin Myers, Venetia Batten, and Gene Day. DJ Chigger Woods had an excellent variety of tunes for dancing. Bob Taylor won the 50/50 drawing.

We are in the process of recruiting Host Teams for 2016. Obviously, some preparation has to take place to arrange the tables and put table cloths on them. And someone has to work the sign-in table, handle the 50/50 drawing, and clean-up. In addition, there are expenses and time involved to purchase plates, cups, forks, spoons, knives, and plastic table cloths for the food table. These items plus decorations have to be stored and replenished. The members who bring food have to purchase and prepare it.

I often hear complaints of having to serve on a host team, select a theme, decorate, and bring food. So, one option is to simplify the process. We could eliminate having a food table and just let people bring snacks for their own table if they want food. We could eliminate themes and decorations and just put out tablecloths. We could eliminate 50/50 and raise the entry fee.

These are only suggestions at this time. Members need to think about this and make your wishes known to members of the Board. Associate Members are eligible for being on a Host Team and may serve on a committee but cannot chair a committee. Since we have a Business Meeting scheduled for the November Social, all in attendance will have an opportunity to respond to a checklist of the options pertaining to socials for 2016. The Board will make a decision based on your responses.

The November Social is also our re-up meeting. Existing members who renew or new members who join for the upcoming year will not pay an entry fee for that event. November is the only month the fee is waived when applying for membership.

See you in November with a “Thank A Veteran” Theme!

Until then, Keep Shagging!!!

“Dancing The Night Away”

Even though we had to switch to Friday night, 80+ people showed up to party at our June 12th Social. A few people who had attended a gathering next door at Mulligan’s stopped by to check out our event as theirs ended.

Fellow MASS Member Gary Garber, DJ for the evening, played a varied selection of tunes that kept everyone dancing. He was also the winner of the 50/50 drawing and has his wife Jo to thank for pulling that ticket!!!

The Host Team for the event included Donna Myrick, Mike Dubbs, Shirley Cox, Amy & Jim Wilson, and Donn Fields. The table décor included old “45 records” and candles for the “Let’s Dance” theme.

To avoid conflicts with July 4th festivities, this date was changed to July 10th which is also a Friday night. Please remember to mark your calendars for that night and bring some friends and food with you! We kept the same theme of “Independence Day,” so you can wear your patriotic red, white and blue! After July, we are back on schedule with first Saturdays until the end of the year.

September will be here before we know it and it is a busy month with both our fundraiser on September 5 and SOS at the beach. Our Fundraiser Team has its third meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, June 16 at 4 pm at the Elks Club. Any MASS member who would like to attend is welcome. We have the caterer in place and have begun soliciting donations from businesses. Some funds have already been donated: $178 (a 50/50 donation) and an anonymous member donation of $250.

All members are encouraged to make donations for our charities (Special Olympics and Interfaith Food Pantry). Make checks payable to MASS and indicate for charities. If 150 people donate $30 each, then that’s $4500. One other point to remember, anyone who donates $100 will receive 2 tickets to the Fundraiser. If anyone is willing to donate a beach condo or mountain cabin for the silent auction, please contact me.

SOS Fall Migration is coming up on September 18- 27. I have SOS cards available for anyone who needs them. They are $30 if purchased through MASS and will cost $35 at the beach. Give me a call if you want to get your card before you go to SOS. We also have Fun Monday tickets to sell at $10 each. The drawing will be held at SOS Fun Monday on September 21 when $11,250 will be given away as follows:

First Ticket pulled is the Big Winner of $7,500
Second Ticket pulled will receive $2,000
Third Ticket pulled will receive $1,000
Fourth Ticket pulled will receive $ 500
Fifth Ticket pulled will receive $ 250

The Club and the person that sells the winning ticket of $7,500 will receive $100. These tickets may be sold to anyone, not just Shag Club members. If you want tickets, please let me know. Someone will be selling these tickets at the next two socials. Ticket sales are through September 1. Last year’s big winner was from Laurinburg.

Until next time, Keep Shagging!!!!

“Derby Day Dancing at May 2nd Social”

Thanks to Mic MacCoy and his team for another festive Kentucky Derby Night. Assisting Mic were members Laura Stutts, Sandra Blake, Bill Shockley, Carole Wunderlin, Nanci Donald, and Bud Hunter. Thanks also to the 15 ladies who entered the Derby Hat Contest. Winner Robbie Taylor sported a wide brim black hat decorated with feathers and spring flowers. Runner-ups were Connie Warren in her hot pink poofy hat (which was actually worn at a previous derby) and Carole Wunderlin in her straw hat trimmed with red roses. In addition, Cliff Brown won the 50/50 – perfectly timed for his May Birthday.

Even though a wide variety of events were scheduled on Saturday, a total of 91 attended the MASS Social. This included 59 Full Members, 17 Associate Members, and 15 New Associate Members. DJ David Sessoms played some old and new shag tunes as well as our favorite line dance music.

Early in the evening members approved the selection of 501(c) 7 as the nonprofit status for our club. Treasurer Bert Higgins and President Yvonne Jordan will submit the application within a few days.

Mike Sigler announced that the socials for the next two months will be held on the second Friday instead of the usual first Saturday. Therefore, our next socials are scheduled on Friday, June 12 and Friday, July 10. Same time (7-11 pm), same place (Elks Lodge, Southern Pines). Please make note of these changes on your calendars. The June Host Team already has a theme (Let’s Dance). At this time, there is no host team for July 10. Contact me or Connie Warren or send an email if you will host in July (lots of decorations for Independence Day are already in the MASS closet, just need to set out them out on tables——Hey, how easy is that???)

After Social 165 closed, MASS member Charles Ross agreed to open Down Memory Lane on Wednesday nights for shag and line dancing with music by DJ Curtis Carpenter. Obviously, sufficient attendance is necessary to keep this mid-week dancing opportunity available. So, come on out to DML to unwind, socialize, and dance on Wednesday nights from 7pm to 11pm!

Finally, Fundraiser Planning is underway. Come to the next meeting on Tuesday, May 12 at 4 pm at the Elks Club if you want to be a part of the planning process.

Until next month, Keep Shagging!!
