History of MASS

MASS was chartered in 1992 as a Non Profit Shag Dance and Social Club dedicated to the education, preservation and promotion of the Carolina Shag Dance and Beach Music in Moore County, North Carolina. The Board of Directors for MASS is dedicated to making an impact in the local community by providing support for local charities in Moore County.

On December 31, 2014, Moore Area Shag Society officially became an incorporated organization known as Moore Area Shag Society, Inc. In early 2015, the club identified its “non-profit” status by self-proclaiming as a 501(7) Nonprofit Organization.

In its early history, the club held its Social Events upstairs at The Barn Restaurant in Southern Pines. Later, Socials were held in the bar area downstairs at the Elks Club, also in Southern Pines. As the number of members increased, the Socials were moved upstairs in the ballroom of the Elks Club. Based upon the upcoming sale of the Elks Club, Socials moved to the ballroom of Down Memory Lane in Aberdeen in August, 2016.
